IMPACT OF SECURITY DILEMMA

In previous article we discussed about causes of Security Dilemma. Now we will know about the impacts of this concept.

NEGETIVE IMPACT OF SECURITY DILEMMA

 

SOURCE OF CONFLICT

In anarchic nature of International System every state is suspicious for each other. They increase their security to protect themselves. This creates security dilemma in all others and they came into conflict with each other. Conflict doesn’t only mean war like situation it also includes alliances with revelry state’s enemy state to create more tension in that state. It increases more conflicts in all states.

 

MAXIMIZE SECURITY

Although maximize security is good point to secure states. But States in Security Dilemma interpret it as an act of aggression. So, they increase their security. It leads more accumulation of weapons mostly nuclear weapons. This will be dangerous for whole world.

 

ARM RACE

Security Dilemma encourage Arm Race. This increases more insecurity in states. The most common impact of Arm Race is maximization of nuclear weapons. It will create fearful environment for those countries which want peace. So, they will be forced to manage their military power. e.g. India is peaceful country. It always stands for peace in International System. But in Security Dilemma it forced to increased its military power and acquire more nuclear weapons which give insecurity in neighbors countries and more chances of conflicts.

 

JOIN GROUPS

Security Dilemma give birth to cold war. USA and USSR came into arm race. To increase the influences over other countries both of them create groups. USA create NATO and USSR create Warsaw Pact. At that time most of the developing countries got independent. So USA and USSR both wants that the developing countries join their groups and have the influence over them. So that they will become more powerful from each other. It creates tension in developing countries and threat for their sovereignty. They will become more dependent on developed countries for their security.

 

MAXIMUM EXPENDITURE ON SECURITY

Every state wants to develop themselves. These developments include Economic, Social, Culturally, remove poverty etc. To achieve these developments states wants to become economically strong so that they can maximize their developments and increase their people’s living standard. But in International System developments become second priority first is security. When states are secure from externa or internally as well then, they can develop themselves in real sense. So their expenditure which should be for developments are investing in security. Security Dilemma become main reason for this. States feel insecure in Security Dilemma and in the race to achieve security their maximum expenditure done on Security instead of development.

POSITIVE IMPACT OF SECURITY DILEMMA

 

DEVELOPMENT OF NEW MILITARY TECHNOLOGIES

The main positive impact of Security Dilemma is the development of new military technologies. To secure themselves every state take step. Many inventions came into existence in military line. In International System these technologies for security purpose make important role.

 

BALANCE OF POWER

In the race of development every state wants more security and make more developments to enhance themselves. Security Dilemma give them more reasons for states to gain more power. In International System powerful countries make balance of power. The main feature of balance of power is it give less chances for world war.

 

POSSIBLITY OF WORLD GOVERNMENT

To attain more security every state want acquire more and more power. But after attain security States concerns about it and suspicious with other states especially rivalry states. So in this anarchic structure of International System there is possibility to make world government so that they can overcome from this security dilemma.

OVERCOME FROM SECURITY DILEMMA

We discussed about impact of Security Dilemma. Negative impact is more that positive one. So it is important that state should be overcome from this. There are some points from which states can overcome from this dilemma.

 
NEGOTIATION

Negotiation is most important feature to overcome from Security Dilemma. When states negotiate with each other and clear their doubt they will feel more secure.

 

MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING

Mutual understanding between states over conflict will collapse the idea of security dilemma. This understanding become reason for good relation in states and leads developments n all countries and make peace.

 

WORLD GOVERNMENT OR ORGANIZATION

World Government or organization which has power to authorize International System is very important to make peace and for overcome from anarchic structure.

 

LESS DIFFERENCE IN NATIONAL INTEREST AND GLOBAL INTEREST

Every state’s national interest is to develop themselves but in anarchic nature of International System state’s global interest is to secure themselves and they make more expenditure on military. So, they get stuck into the two goals. When they minimize the difference between these interest, they will overcome from Security Dilemma.

 

CONCLUSION

Many scholars thinks that today the concept of security dilemma is irrelevant because end of cold war. But today scenario we can see that most of countries are concern about their security. And arm race still exists. We can’t ignore security dilemma. Most of the countries has issues with other countries and it become main case of security dilemma. But we can’t ignore organizations and negotiations which give us hope to overcome from it.
