ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF FEDERALISM

Federalism is system of government in which the power is divided between a central authority and various constituent units of the state. Federation has two level of government. One is the government for entire nations which based on national interest and other is on provinces level of government that look after administering of their province or state. Both these levels of government enjoy their power independent. Federation is different from unitary system. Under unitary system there is only one central government who enjoy their power independently. The central government can pass orders to the provincial or the local government. But in federal government central government can’t order the state government to do something. State government has powers of its own for which it is not answerable to the central government. Both these government are separately answerable to the people.

ADVANTAGES OF FEDERALISM

DECENTRALIZATION OF POWER

First and most important feature of Federalism is the decentralization of powers. By diffusing power to multiple branches of office, like the U. S. does with the executive legislative and judicial segments, it becomes more challenging for one division to take over the country. When power is not centralized in a government, then there are fewer issues with individual corruption that can impact the entire nation.  It creates efficiencies in the governing system.

DIFFERENT TIERS OF GOVERNMENT

There are two levels or tiers of government central and state. These tiers govern the same citizens but each tier has its own jurisdiction in specific matters of legislation, taxation and administration. The jurisdiction of these levels or tiers of government are specified in the constitution. So, the existence and authority of each tier of government is constitutionally guaranteed.

BATTER COMBINATION BETWEEN STATE AND CENTRAL

The Federal system has dual objective to safeguard and promote unity of the country, while at the same time accommodate regional diversity. Therefore, two aspects are crucial for the institutions and practice of federalism. So, to reach this objective it is important for both to make good combination with each other. They should agree of same rule.

INCREASE POLITICAL PARTICIPATION

Federal system promotes policy innovation and political participation. More decentralization of powers means more participation of people. People are aware of politics and political development in this system. And this is very important for the development of the nations. People become more involved with their government in a variety of ways when federalism is the structure in place. Elected members of government are closer to people which means people can visit a local office to express their opinion without a fear of judgment.

CHECKS AND BALANCE

Different levels in Federal system are responsible for checks and balance in nations as a way to create an equal governing process. It makes administration smoother. There are less chances of corruption.

GOVERNMENT BECOME MORE RESPONSIVE TO INDIVIDUAL NEEDS

When a government or official members is closer to its citizens, then it can provide responsibility in elected members to satisfy their citizens and provide them good governing. The local governments could distribute resources first instead of relying on the national government.

DISADVANTAGES OF FEDERALISM

Federalism Disadvantages

PROTECT THE WILL OF ONLY MAJORITY

In Federal system there is elected members in every responsible office. So they only try to protects majority because they know that in next election they will help them. Minority section of society ignores in this process. This creates discrimination among people.

UNWANTED LAWS

The structure of federalism encourages local communities to self-govern in the most efficient manner possible. So, they make some unwanted laws which can be different from national interest. This creates sometimes fights between central and local government. The structure of this government can create inefficiencies in the system because the national government might not like the way the local officials choose to oversee their communities.

CREATE UNCERTAINTY

Because there are multiple layers of government working cooperatively with one another in federalist system, it can be challenging at times for specific communities to know where they can receive assistance. There are natural disasters, national welfare aid, public education resources, health issues and many more benefits or circumstances where someone must navigate each laved of government to find the results they want.

CONCLUSION

There are both advantages and disadvantages in the Federal system. We can’t deny that the advantages of federal system make it more suitable in today’s world. We should improve these disadvantages in this system that administration will become smoother.
